Turfgrass Varieties & Sod Pallet Specs Guide
Learn how to measure lawn square feet, choose the right grass species for your climate, and understand exact sod roll and pallet coverage rates.
Popular Turfgrass Varieties & Pallet Specs
Pallet yield varies by regional harvesting practices, soil weight, and cut thickness.
Bermuda Grass
Warm-SeasonExtremely durable and fast-growing turf popular in Southern regions and athletic fields. High heat and drought tolerance.
St. Augustine Grass
Warm-SeasonBroad, lush turf blades that perform exceptionally well in coastal and Southern lawns with moderate shade.
Zoysia Grass
Warm-SeasonDense carpet-like feel with low water requirements and superior weed suppression once established.
Tall Fescue
Cool-SeasonDeep-rooted cool-season turf that stays green year-round in transition zones and Northern climates.
Kentucky Bluegrass (KBG)
Cool-SeasonRich dark color with self-repairing rhizomes. Standard for Northern and Midwest lawns.
How to Measure Irregular Lawn Shapes
Break your yard into simple geometric shapes to calculate exact sod coverage before ordering.
e.g. 40 ft × 25 ft = 1,000 sq ft
e.g. (30 ft × 20 ft) ÷ 2 = 300 sq ft
e.g. 3.14 × 15² = 706.5 sq ft
e.g. Split into 2 boxes & add together
e.g. Outer Circle Area minus Pool Cutout Area
3-Step Yard Measuring Strategy
Sketch & Divide
Draw your lawn on paper and break irregular sections into rectangles, triangles & circles.
Measure Boundaries
Use a measuring tape to get dimensions in feet for each zone.
Add 5-10% Cutting Waste
Enter zone dimensions in our calculator below and keep waste allowance for edge trimming.
Golden Rule of Sod Ordering: "Measure twice, order once!" Including a 10% cutting waste buffer avoids expensive separate re-orders mid-job.
Understanding Sod Pallet Sizes & Pallet Coverage Rates
How many square feet in a sod pallet? A standard sod pallet covers between 400 and 500 square feet, depending on packaging format:
Standard Turf Rolls
Cut at 2 feet wide by 5 feet long (10 sq ft per strip). A full pallet carries 45 to 50 rolls, providing 450 to 500 sq ft of coverage.
St. Augustine Sod Slabs
Harvested as flat 16" × 24" slabs (2.67 sq ft each). Pallets carry 150 to 175 slabs supplying approximately 400 to 450 sq ft.
Commercial Big Rolls
Continuous 200 sq ft rolls installed with specialized tractor attachments on golf courses, sports fields, and commercial developments.
How Much Sod Do I Need? Lawn Size Reference Guide
Quick benchmark estimates based on 450 sq ft pallet coverage.
| Lawn Coverage (Sq Ft) | Standard Rolls (10 sq ft) | Pallets Needed (450 sq ft) | Estimated Wet Weight (lbs) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 250 sq ft (Patch Repair) | 25 rolls | 0.56 pallets (~½ pallet) | 1,000 – 1,400 lbs |
| 500 sq ft (Small Yard) | 50 rolls | 1.11 pallets (~1.1 pallets) | 2,000 – 2,800 lbs |
| 1,000 sq ft (Medium Yard) | 100 rolls | 2.22 pallets (~2.2 pallets) | 4,000 – 5,600 lbs |
| 2,500 sq ft (Large Yard) | 250 rolls | 5.56 pallets (~5.6 pallets) | 10,000 – 14,000 lbs |
| 5,000 sq ft (Full Yard) | 500 rolls | 11.11 pallets (~11.1 pallets) | 20,000 – 28,000 lbs |
